Esther Hurlburt

My career in geriatric care management began in 1994 after having spent many years caring for my own parents who lived on the other side of the country.  I have lived through the many transitions families make during the process of aging and disability.

I believe that the days we have left are the most important days. With careful planning and collaboration, my goal as a care manager is to minimize the trauma of aging and replace it with the hope that our last days can be as enjoyable as our first days.

Geriatric care has been my passion since I was a young woman working in nursing homes. I have 30+ years of nursing experience primarily in geriatrics, long term care and rehabilitation. My masters degree in special education compliments my work with clients with mental retardation and physical disabilities. I have a master of divinity degree and training in chaplaincy. This combination of education and experience enables me to address each client's needs holistically.

I enjoy a variety of civic and inter-faith activity. I am a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Community Ministries, and the founder of a non profit home for aging women with modest income.  I have developed and present workshops about the relationship between caregivers and care receivers. I live in an old house and enjoy gardening, travel, reading, yoga, and most outdoor activity.

I joined ParentCareKY part time in 1999 working with Esther in that capacity until deciding to make this my major focus in 2005 and subsequently becoming a partner in our business.

My masters degree is in social work and I have 34 years of combined clinical practice, administrative and management experience. The majority of my career has been in mental health, rehabilitation and hospital settings.

I enjoy the totality of what we do with our clients and families, and my particular passion lies in patient advocacy, and in navigating and coordinating the medical and community based service systems that confound us all at times. Most of our clients are at a point of transition or facing significant life changes; there is great satisfaction in helping them to make decisions and order their lives in a way that maintains their autonomy and hopefully makes " growing old gracefully " more than just a catch phrase. My second focus is on providing education and support to our client's families as they face the role of caregiver, often from a distance, and attempt to find some balance in lives that are already filled with multiple responsibilities.

I am fortunate to have several family members living in Lexington and spend lots of my free time enjoying them. Otherwise you can find me either gardening, serving as a volunteer for community organizations, reading a good book, or thinking of ways to get to a beach !
